Why You Should Stretch Weekly

For many of us stretching is just something you might do if you had extra time, but who has extra time am I right?

The reality though is finding the time to stretch will keep you injury free and keep your body agile for many years to come.

Without stretching our bodies get aches, pains, it hinders our movement, and ultimately leads to injury. Sometimes in extreme cases it leads to surgery or altering your lifestyle.

For an example, I have a friend who LOVES to run (I know, I don’t get it either). She not only loves it, but she’s really good at it. She even qualified for the Boston marathon. A few months before she was suppose to run the Boston however, she started noticing a pain in her leg. It got so bad she went to the doctor for it.

After seeing a sports doctor and a few tests later the doctor asked her “how often do you stretch?”

“…ummm, I don’t.”

This girl has been running for 15 plus years, and never stretched. Because of this her leg muscles and IT band were so tight they were about to snap. Seriously.

End result? Not only was she not able to run in the Boston marathon, she had to stop running altogether for a long time and start stretching daily with yoga.

Moral of the story

Stretch. Please. 🙂

If you need help and don’t know where to start or what stretches to do, here is a flow and stretch video for you. It’s a mix of yoga and stretches you can do along with me after a workout or pause and stretch for as long as you need, but I recommend holding a pose for about 30-60 seconds.
